As we celebrate this season, we honour the rich traditions embraced by our diverse newcomer communities. Here are some of the meaningful celebrations observed during December and January:

  • Christmas (Dec 25) is celebrated widely across Canada and many newcomer communities, marking a time of generosity, family, and togetherness.
  • Hanukkah honours the Jewish Festival of Lights, with families lighting the menorah and celebrating resilience and hope.
  • Kwanzaa (Dec 26–Jan 1) celebrates African heritage, unity, and cultural pride through seven guiding principles.
  • New Year’s Day (Jan 1) brings traditions of renewal, reflection, and hope for new beginnings.
  • Orthodox Christmas (Jan 7) is observed by many Ukrainian, Russian, Ethiopian, and other Eastern Christian communities, celebrated with church services and cultural traditions.
  • Lunar New Year (late Jan/early Feb) brings together Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and many other communities for festive meals, red envelopes, and wishes for prosperity.
  • Lohri (Jan 13) holds special importance in Punjabi culture, marked by bonfires, dancing, and gratitude for warmth and community.

No matter what you celebrate, we wish you a season filled with peace, connection, and hope — and a bright year ahead.
