Dec 23, 2025
As we celebrate this season, we honour the rich traditions embraced by our diverse newcomer communities. Here are some of the meaningful celebrations observed during December and January:
- Christmas (Dec 25) is celebrated widely across Canada and many newcomer communities, marking a time of generosity, family, and togetherness.
- Hanukkah honours the Jewish Festival of Lights, with families lighting the menorah and celebrating resilience and hope.
- Kwanzaa (Dec 26–Jan 1) celebrates African heritage, unity, and cultural pride through seven guiding principles.
- New Year’s Day (Jan 1) brings traditions of renewal, reflection, and hope for new beginnings.
- Orthodox Christmas (Jan 7) is observed by many Ukrainian, Russian, Ethiopian, and other Eastern Christian communities, celebrated with church services and cultural traditions.
- Lunar New Year (late Jan/early Feb) brings together Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and many other communities for festive meals, red envelopes, and wishes for prosperity.
- Lohri (Jan 13) holds special importance in Punjabi culture, marked by bonfires, dancing, and gratitude for warmth and community.
No matter what you celebrate, we wish you a season filled with peace, connection, and hope — and a bright year ahead.
